Which drugs are involved? Various studies have indicated a loss of bone density and increased risk of broken bones in people using long-term anti-epileptic drugs, but did not indicate which drugs were being taken. Others show increased activity in bone cells but with adequate retention of bone density in children with either sodium valproate or carbamazapine (Tegretol).

Anti-epileptic drugs are used mainly for the condition called epilepsy which causes seizures, sometimes called ‘fits’. Anti-epileptic drugs are thought to affect bone density (the quantity of bone that when measured helps to indicate bone strength) by affecting the way vitamin D is broken down and used by the body. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium which is a vital nutrient for bones.

A fine, hollow needle connected to a suction device is passed through the wall of the vagina or abdomen into an ovary. The needle is used to suction out fluid from each egg sac called a follicle. Sometimes, no egg is obtained. Other times as many as 10 or more eggs are obtained from several follicles. Most often, the needle is guided by a vaginal ultrasound probe. With OHSS, ovary sacs fill up with fluid and form cysts that can rupture. Sometimes, fluid leaks into the lungs and abdomen; 1-2% of women are hospitalized to remove fluid. Some require surgery to remove ovaries. Rare, but serious, risks include blood clots that can lead to a stroke, kidney damage and possibly death. If you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or chills, abdominal pain or swelling with weight gain, decreased amount of urine or decreased need to urinate, dark urine, shortness of breath or trouble breathing, CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.
